Term Paper Help: How To Compose A Strong Introduction

Your term paper introduction will lead your reader into the rest of your paper so it’s important that it contains all the info it needs. A good introduction will always successfully summarize the content of the paper and give the reader the gist of what it is about. This is not always easy to do because of the length of this section, but by not being wasteful with words, you can convey your message in as few words as possible. But more than this, you will need to add mystery to the introduction so as to entice the reader to read further. Here’s a quick guide on how to do all of this.

Do your outline first

If you work out your outline before writing the introduction, you will have a bird’s eye view of what the paper is all about. From here, it becomes easier to restate at least one sentence about every subsection and compress it all into one paragraph. This gives the reader a overall view on the whole paper.

Put forth your main objective

Every term paper should have one main point that the writer is trying to make. Establish what this is and make sure you convey it in your introduction. Failure to do this may mislead the reader into thinking the paper is about something else—and will ultimately lose his or her interest.

Be concise without being vague

Try to say as much as you can in as little words as possible with your introduction. This may take some refinement, but by combing over every sentence and word, you will determine which words and phrases can be left out and which are important to the section.

Leave questions in the reader’s mind

Be sure to create a little bit of mystery in the mind of the reader. He or she must wonder what insights you have in store for them. You want to entice them to read further so try and be fairly cryptic, but not too much that it is obvious.

Use ‘head-nodding’ phrases

Give your reader something they can relate to. This is something many introductions lack, which is why adding this aspect to your own will make your paper stand out nicely. Make at least one statement that will have your reader nodding his or her head after they read it.
